Flavor of the Week #42

Maelstrom
https://maelstromraar.bandcamp.com
https://www.instagram.com/le_maelstrom/
( ;D --> Maelstrom, the French electro maestro, has returned to Central Processing Unit with his fourth album, The FM Tapes. This 11-track masterpiece is a testament to his skill as a producer and his love for the genre. From the opening track, Ondes Courtes, Maelstrom establishes a dark and brooding atmosphere. The track's intricate synth work and tight, shuffling beats immediately grab your attention. Tracks like Alt50ser and La Vie Sociale Des Sons continue to push forward with their frenetic energy and complex soundscapes. However, what sets The FM Tapes apart is its emotional depth.)

www.kode9.com
( ;D --> Kode9 (born Steve Goodman in Glasgow, Scotland) is a London-based electronic music artist, DJ, and owner of the Hyperdub record label. An MC, The Spaceape, is a frequent collaborator. Initially inspired by what he calls the "hardcore continuum", he also draws on dub reggae, and was one of the founding members of the early dubstep scene (which he views as a continuation of developments originally stemming from UK Hardcore). He appeared on the Grime compilation on Rephlex, and released the full-length album Memories of the Future (featuring the Spaceape) on his own label Hyperdub. Kode9 has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Warwick and has published a book, Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear.)

Kite

( ;D --> The story of Kite started when Christian Berg (Yvonne, Strip Music) asked Nicklas Stenemo (The Mo, Melody Club) to sing on one of Christian’s instrumental songs. The day after the demo version of ”My girl and I” was finished. They started to make songs at a daily basis in Nicklas’ studio where Christian’s love for monotone synth melted together with Nicklas’ pophits. One day Nicklas sold his Fender guitar and the band Kite was born.)

( ;D --> Daphne Guinness had lived many lives before she turned to music: heiress, philanthropist, mother, muse. She modelled for such fashion greats as Karl Lagerfeld and Philip Treacy, produced and appeared in Oscar nominated art films, designed her own lines of jewelry, make-up and perfume, and enjoyed long creative associations with editor Isabella Blow, designer Alexander McQueen and photographers David LaChapelle and Nick Knight. But really, her greatest work of art has been herself. With her extraordinary two-tone beehive hairdo, vertiginous platform shoes, exotically layered costumes and phantasmagoric jewelry, Daphne Guinness became renowned as one of the most strikingly dressed women on the planet.)

Red Cell
https://redcell.nu/
www.facebook.com/redcellmusic
( ;D --> Red Cell - unabashedly a synth-pop band who channel the genre’s pioneers. Their music, as such, isn’t the electronic-oriented, dance-infused stuff currently being heard on the radio. It isn’t even the warm new wave of New Order. Instead, Red Cell are replicating the early musicians who took analogue synthesizers and manipulated sound, and following the works of artists who integrated elements of other genres like progressive rock and industrial.)

Rue Oberkampf

https://rueoberkampf.bandcamp.com/
( ;D --> Founded at the end of 2016 by three DJ*s, Rue Oberkampf combines 80s ecstasy with the atmosphere of fog-shrouded, strobe-lit dance temples of the techno era. The combination of urban electronic music’s gritty drive with Julia’s French-German vocals reminds some critics of a more forceful version of Deux or Kirlian Camera: yet at the same time it creates something entirely original.)

( ;D --> Haujobb is a German musical project whose output has ranged drastically within the electronic music spectrum, from electro-industrial to IDM and techno. They have become a staple crossover act, bringing several forms of electro into the mainstream industrial music world. Haujobb was formed in 1993 by Daniel Myer, Dejan Samardzic, and Björn Junemann, pulling the name from the Blade Runner translation of "skin job". Along with such other notables as :wumpscut: and VNV Nation, Haujobb are bringing, if possible, an even newer surge of adrenaline to a genre that already seems expanding to burst. Alfons' debut 'TRST' was released this past February and since then, he has taken his provocative sound to clubs across the globe. Dramatic landscapes take us from sonic and sexy to heavy and moody with Alfons' deep laments and moans guiding us through mazes of synth beats and pulsating rhythm. In a world of self-conscious gazes, inhibited desire and overwhelming attraction, the sound of Trust is saturated in a plethora of sounds that take us on an epic trip from places cold and distant to sexy and flirtatious, with rhythm that will incite both lust and the need to dance.)

Both current members have solo projects, with Henke releasing under his own name and Pröfrock as T++ and Various Artists. In 2008 T++ followed Ricardo Villalobos in bridging the gap between minimal techno and dubstep, by remixing Shackleton's Death Is Not Final for the Skull Disco label. In 2009, Robert Henke appeared in the electronic music documentary Speaking In Code which presented the completion of the Monodeck.
