Flavor of the Week #22

Francoise Dillinger + LLoyd Stellar
( ;D --> Detroit based electro and techno artist Francois Dillinger (Natural Sciences, Blind Allies, Dionysian Mysteries) collaborates with LDI Records owner Lloyd Stellar for the imprint's third vinyl release. Machine Men EP sees the pair working in a deep and contemplative sonic world, inspired by the potential future where the relationship between man and machine becomes blurred. The story of this EP takes place on a future earth, at a time where technological performance enhancing implants push identities of human and machine into a gray area which is no longer binary. On this earth, conservative groups oppose this development, stuck in the idea that machines are subordinate to humans. The EP explores this oppression of different ideas around identity, finding parallels with the same discourse and challenges that today we see in modern society and the fight against conservative, populist right wing politics to create an accepting and equal world. Specializing in moody, atmospheric electro, LDI Records (Lloyd's Dark Imperium) are an essential label to watch.) LDI Records.)

His electro sound is characterized by machine-like beats, melancholic pads, vocoder-driven vocals and futuristic themes that often deal with the apocalyptic consequences of man's greed, the relationship between humans and machines and wars on distant planets.)

Kangding Ray
www.kangdingray.com
( ;D --> Kangding Ray is David Letellier Born 1978 in France, lives and works in Berlin.Studied and graduated in architecture in Rennes and Berlin, works in different fields: music, architecture, performances, installations. Evolved as a guitarist and drummer in bands whose influences ranged from noise-rock, to jazz, before buying an akai sampler and moving on to electronic music. Kangding ray's music reflects his wide musical background, and a particular way of merging beats and textured soundscapes into slowly evolving compositions. KR combines machines with « real instruments » in a subtle and rythmic suite, integrating noises, walls of distortion, massive bass lines, voices and field recordings. The result is a blend of deep advanced grooves and dark atmospheres, that one could describe as « abstract bass music ».)

Lycia
https://www.facebook.com/LyciaBand/
( ;D --> There are many ways to describe darkwave band Lycia. Given the group’s quintessential gothic temperament, bleak, beautiful, esoteric, and ethereal?all ring true. Mentioned less often, however, is the band’s influence on a raft of acts that have quarried the dark veins of evocativeness that Lycia exposed. Label Handmade Birds recently released Lycia’s 1996 album, Cold, on LP for the first time, and with the band’s first full- length in? a decade, Quiet Moments, due for release in August, Cold‘s reappearance is a timely reminder of Lycia’s legacy in the sphere of bewitchingly mournful music. Lycia’s melding of dreamy synth and solemn rock has had a formative role to play in inspiring and nurturing artists who make brooding and shadowy rock and pop, and many contemporary noise, metal, and hauntological electronic outfits have also clearly drawn from Lycia’s darkly poetic oevure for inspiration. The band was originally founded as a solo project by guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist Mike Van Portfleet in 1988. However, it’s Lycia’s mid-‘90s work (with vocalist Tara Vanflower and multi-instrumentalist David Galas) that is most heralded for its blend of dark psychedelia, electronic soundscapes and spectral, plaintive vocals.)

In an early age he showed interest in electronic music: first it was Kraftwerk, and then later, he expanded to the sounds of Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and such. In the age of 10 he heard his first goa track, and was fascinated and thrilled with this type of music and the emotions he felt.)

Chris Carter

( ;D --> Chris Carter sure has turned his childhood hobby into a career. Born in Islington, London, England on January 28, 1953, Carter became enchanted with high-tech equipment early in his youth. When he was only a boy, Carter spent hours playing with a tape deck; his father would record family conversations and add sound effects to them, even changing speeds. At the age of 13, Carter fell in love with mixing electronic sounds. Carter joined a garage band called the Dragsters in 1967. A year later, Carter took drugs and saw Pink Floyd perform at a dive in North London. The group's visual presentation and acid-damaged pop left Carter spellbound. Inspired, Carter formed Orpheus Lites with his friend Chris Panayiotou, providing local acts with Pink Floyd-ish psychedelic light shows. Orpheus Lites eventually turned into an integral part of their biggest client, the outfit Willa. Carter joined Willa as a keyboardist, but he left in 1974. In 1975, Carter made his solo debut, performing at Thurrock Technical College in England as Waveforms, utilizing synthesizers and keyboards. He then met future bandmates Genesis P-Orridge (vocals) and Cosey Fanni Tutti (guitar), both of whom were in COUM Transmissions, a performance art ensemble that disgusted and disturbed English audiences by torturing their g*****ls and licking their vomit on-stage. With the addition of Carter, COUM Transmissions evolved into industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. In 1980, Carter released his first album, The Space Between. Throbbing Gristle broke up a year later, and Carter started collaborating with Fanni Tutti as Chris & Cosey and Creative Technology Insitute, otherwise known as CTI. They also created their own record label, Conspiracy International. Carter entered the journalism field in the '90s, writing music reviews; he also designed album covers with Fanni Tutti and remixed two songs from Erasure.)

Early on Extrawelt’s productions quickly caught the ear of James Holden, who signed their first track to his own Border Community Label. ( ;D --> The collaborative debut of American minimal techno producer Troy Pierce and Colombian audiovisual artist Natalia Escobar aka Poison Arrow was conceived in reverse: first they created a collection of shadowy surrealist videos, then wrote music inspired by them. This inverted process proved remarkably fruitful. Shatter is a simmering, slow-burn noir odyssey inspired by the Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus, traversing subtle shades of sleepwalker dub, metallic lament, broken beats, and erotic negative space. It's an effectively unsettling evocation of the legend's core theme: “There is nothing more complex than a shattered heart, or a heart that can't love.” #ambienttechno #darkwave #drone #electronic #xperimental #minimal #techno.)

Starting at age 17, sneaking into New York City clubs with fake IDs, LOUISAHHH!!! (a name chosen ‘as a war cry or a shriek of delight’) has since honed a style that is hard but deep, tough but tender. After moving to Los Angeles in 2006, LOUISAHHH!!! became half of house-centric production duo NYCPARTYINFO, releasing records with Throne of Blood, Nurvous and Young Adults. However, it wasn’t until friend Danny Daze requested some vocals for his group Senor Stereo that LOUISAHHH!!!’s talents as a singer began to shine, gaining more notoriety as modern classic ‘Your Everything’ climbed the deep house charts. Amidst this whirlwind of excitement, a fateful meeting of French techno wonderkind, Brodinski spiraled into a fast friendship and eventual collaboration for Brodinski’s young label, Bromance Records. With ‘Let the Beat Control Your Body’ and ‘Nobody Rules the Streets’ becoming peak-time anthems, and explosive vocal collaborations in the realms of both deep house and new techno, Louisahhh was getting ready to release her own productions into the world.)
