Flavor of the week #30

Kuedo (Jamie Vex'd)
www.myspace.com/kuedo
( ;D --> Jamie Vex'd slips into his Kuedo moniker for a delightfully wonky mix of bass music.Even if you only have a passing interest in the more sub-heavy end of dance music, chances are you'll have heard of Vex'd. Jamie Teasdale and Roly Porter's fusion of dubstep with industrial and UK rave music on 2005's Degenerate album paved the way for countless international and festival appearances. Tiring of the hectic schedule and life in London, the pair decided to move from the city in early '07, with Roly heading west to Bristol and Jamie jetting to Berlin. Unfortunately, this meant that producing collaborative Vex'd material for their planned second album was a slow and difficult process, and they consequently decided to each focus on their own solo material. Jamie has been the more prolific of the two thus far, again aligning himself with Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu imprint for 12-inches both as Jamie Vex'd, and more recently under his new Kuedo moniker. The recent material has seen Teasdale move away from the dark and industrial dubstep sound of Vex'd, instead taking inspiration from the new wave of off-kilter beatsmiths that have emerged in the post-Dilla era.)

( ;D --> The duo Vex’d were among the first of the dubstep generation of producers to collect their work on a full album. Degenerate was assembled in 2005, around the time these childhood friends had moved to Bristol to soak up the birthplace of the electronics that had inspired them. Their work together has been sporadic since, but the spooks+jackhammers of tracks like “Crusher Dub” have resonated widely. Maybe even back to the source: Portishead’s “Machine Gun” gets its stun from the same mix of unnatural snares and lovely ambiance.)

( ;D --> Dubstep is now more of an institution than a modality. One need only compare Vex’d’s Cloud Seed with any of the current outputs sprouting from Hotflush, Punch Drunk, 3024, Hyperdub, or even Vex’d’s own host label, Planet Mu, to witness the ways in which the temperature within the scene has gravitated from chilly to hot, and in which the landscape has deviated from sepulchral post-industrial ruins to a kind of reconstructive modernism.)

( ;D --> Jimmy Edgar is a Detroit-based electronic music artist, signed to Warp Records. Influenced mostly by Jazz, funk, street beat and r&b in these early years, he began his musical pursuit by playing the drums in experimental bands and by making tape recordings. Most of these recordings, consisting mainly of pitch bended tape loops, cut edits, field recordings, and noise tracks, were the beginning of his experimentation with the technical aspects of production.)

( ;D --> Strong industrial dark ambient with a lot of reference to In Slaughter Natives.)
Golden Section

( ;D --> After releasing their debut album, Candles Burning Blue, in 1996, it was silent around the industrial doomed goths for three years. Their second album, The Golden Section, was an impressive display of ambient electronics combined with a equally ambient touch of droning blackmetal riffing. The incantating songlines and poetic references make this a strange but hypnotizing album. Probably on purpose, the band remains somewhat of a mystery when it comes to members, but it is generally accepted to have members of some more famous blackmetal bands involved.)

( ;D --> Former member of Swedish industrial cult band Njurmännen, Lina Baby Doll (real name Peter Andersson) set up his own musical project in 1991. Inspired by the classic Amon Düül II song of the same name, Deutsch Nepal started with a deep and fascinating industrial ambient sound, enriched by hypnotic rhythms, voice samples and repetitive structures.)
