Flavor of the Week #24

Lee Gamble

( ;D --> Gamble’s music has the feel of someone floating above it, looking in, only tangentially participating in what’s going on. Beats are muffled, signals echo for an eternity; on “Head Model”, there’s acres of room between the parts being triggered, but it never feels like there’s a ton of space opening up. Instead, it’s all dense, claustrophobic reflection, with many of Gamble’s tracks trapped in one very specific moment without any forward flow at all. Occasionally there’s movement, but even that verges on the cyclical. “HMix” begins with a charge of muddied beats and bass, only to get filtered into reedy compression that resembles the worst kind of amphetamine headrush. There’s a similar mindset here to others who have attempted to scoop out the innards of electronics to see what remains—Actress, Autechre, Pan Sonic—but Gamble is in an even more detached place, where the inclusionary side of club culture appears utterly alien.)

( ;D --> Linea Aspera is the London duo of Ryan Ambridge (Synths/Programming) and Alison Lewis (Vocals/Synths). They began the project in November 2011, technically drawing inspiration from electronic music from the early 1980s. Within the duo, Alison writes and performs all vocal elements, while Ryan is responsible for the writing and performing of the electronics, as well as recording and mixing of the final recordings. For their debut album they utilized small, simple analog synthesizer set up: Roland SH-09, Roland Juno 6, Vermona DRM MKiii, Korg Poly 800 and Analogue Solutions Semblance. Linea Aspera’s sound includes clear influences from early electronic body music, classic synth-pop and, in some instances, industrial and noise. Lyrically the band incorporates the sciences of osteology, neuroscience, and anthropology weaving a new medical language around themes of desire, despair and renewal. Linea Aspera serve up an icebox of dark doom riding on Alison’s powerful vocals with a soft but sharp touch.)

( ;D --> The italian band Synapsyche was born in the late 2008 by the will of Stefano “Mannequinetik”, mastermind and only composer, with the intent to create an electro-industrial project with dark and aggrotech features, a bit lacking in their own motherland. To start the band up, he simply needed to integrate a singer, expert for both clean and harsh vocals, and able to manage lyrics, vocal lines and rhythmics: the choice falls on Marco “Katatronik” Mantovani, performer with a 10-years experience as singer, both melodic in an italian rock band (Zona Traffico Libero) and screaming-growling in a melodic death metal band (Ultima Necat).)

Mondträume

alfa-matrix-store.com/mondtraume
( ;D --> Mondträume originates in the mind of Pikotto in 2010 with the purpose of creating a sound based on melodic electronic music, with just a theme in active (Life is Short) he manages to appear on Extreme Sündenfall vol. 10, with the participation of another singer. Not really fulfilled with the final result, he keeps on searching for that special voice. In late 2011, Pikotto meets Damasius finding the missing vocal part, remaking Life is Short and it is then when Mondträume consolidates as a band and achieves the desired harmony between base and voice.)

Influences from Rock, world music, contemporary music also play a part on AE’s sound.)
