( ;D --> Seminal soundtrack for the 1995 anime classic Ghost In The Shell, written by Japanese film composer Kenji Kawai gets an unofficial release by Binyl. The film follows the hunt for the public security agency’s search for an elusive hacker figure known as The Puppet Master. Whereas the majority of the songs are instrumentals centred around taiko drums and ambient synth textures that mimic the plot, the opening main theme ‘Making of a Cyborg’ features a Japanese choir. The female voices are singing parts of the wedding song toho kami emi tame in the ancient language of Yamato, fusing traditional Japanese notes with Bulgarian harmony, with its swelling synths perfectly capturing the building tension towards the climax of the film. This soundtrack is said to have influenced Boards of Canada, Hudson Mohawke, Lone, plus many other contemporary electronic producers, and is a must-have for all record collectors.)

A student of Joseph Beuys, he founded Berlin's legendary Zodiak Free Arts Lab, a subculture club, in 1967/68, was a member of Tangerine Dream (together with Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese) and Kluster (with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius) and also released countless solo albums. There was a particular type of artist who could only have emerged in the legendary early 1970s. Few musicians fit the bill better than Konrad Schnitzler (later Conrad). Revolution, pop art and Fluxus created a climate which engendered unbridled artistic and social development. Radical utopias, excessive experimentation with drugs, ruthless (in a positive way) transgression of aesthetic frontiers were charac­teristic of the period. The magic words were "subculture", "progressivity" and "avant-gardism". West Berlin, with its unique political status, was a crucible of turbulence. Founded in 1968, the Zodiak Free Arts Lab was the ultimate point of convergence for subculture in West Berlin, with Konrad Schnitzler the driving force behind it. It was also here that Tangerine Dream and Kluster first met up to perform in public.)

The late James Stinson was the only officially identified member of Drexciya, but it was considered an open secret that he had a partner, Gerald Donald. The majority of Drexciya's releases were in the style of dance-floor-oriented Electro, punctuated with elements of retro, 1980s Detroit Techno, with occasional excursions into the Ambient and Industrial genres. Tracks are mostly centered around the TR-808 drum machine, with bass, melodies, and synth textures ebbing and flowing in time. Anecdotes suggest that Stinson and Donald recorded tracks while playing the instruments live, making use of analogue equipment and sequencing methods. Drexciya combined a faceless, underground, anti-mainstream media stance with mythological, sci-fi narratives, to help heighten the dramatic effect of their music. In this aspect they were similar to artists within and close to the Detroit collective Underground Resistance.)
