Minuit Machine

( ;D --> Minuit Machine, a synth wave band based in Paris, is the association of Hélène de Thoury’s electronic melodies and Amandine Stioui’s vocals. The project was born in september 2013. The sound of the french duo, based on powerful electronic drums and the accumulation of dark synth lines, is a mix between all their inspirations that range from minimal wave to electronic rock.)

Agent Side Grinder
www.agentsidegrinder.com
( ;D --> Agent Side Grinder’s slick and gritty modern take on the minimal wave, post-punk, and industrial sound(s) of yesteryear come alive in a stripped, cold, and pop-like fashion on the act’s newest album Hardware. “On this record, ASG once again steps into their musical time-machine, has a rendezvous with old masters such as Kraftwerk, Einsturzende Neubaten and Depeche Mode and invite them all on a reckless, rhythmic journey into a bleak future.” While a fitting description of Hardware from the Agent Side Grinder website, its own legs extend more than that of its expected retro drapes.)

( ;D --> For over 15 years Paula Temple has been pursuing her own unique musical path. As a self-confessed noisician she specialises in a noisy, phantasmagoric techno sound, where the dial is rarely turned below 200% and every moment of silence seems deafening. Such refreshing high voltage music has placed Paula at the forefront of today's techno scene.)

UnicaZürn
www.unicazurn.com/
( ;D --> UnicaZürn are: Stephen Thrower (Cyclobe; Coil) and David Knight (Arkkon; Shock Headed Peters; Danielle Dax; Lydia Lunch) Both are also members of the improvisation group The Amal Gamal Ensemble.UnicaZürn’s core musical instrumentation is processed electric guitar, clarinet and saxophone. Knight is renowned for his pulverising fretwork in Shock Headed Peters, and his cavernous guitar treatments in Arkkon; Thrower’s reed playing provided a distinctive ‘free-melancholy’ in Coil and emerges as electro-acoustic texture in Cyclobe. To this duophonic arrangement, UnicaZürn add copious analogue synthesizer, mellotron and piano, with influences echoing back through Tangerine Dream’s early albums to the VCS3 days of Roxy Music. UnicaZürn offer a deeply immersive music which hovers at the brink of abstraction, seeking to conjure at that threshold fantastical coastlines and subterranean narratives in the mind’s eye.)

Alex Banks

( ;D --> Alex Banks’ musical mission is going into overdrive. After building a hefty reputation via killer DJs sets across Europe and a few extraordinary remixes (Bonobo, Husky Rescue, Andreya Triana etc), he’s now signed to Monkeytown, the label owned by doyens of German electronic/club music, Modeselektor. His talents are showcased on the album, ‘Illuminate’. Two years in the making, it’s the culmination of Banks’ initial aspirations, at once rich in production artistry but ready for the dancefloor, seasoned with melodies and the leaping vocals of Gazelle Twin’s Elizabeth Bernholz, yet boasting a sonic heft and ambition on a par with the likes of Jon Hopkins, Daniel Avery and Nicolas Jaar.)

White Ring
www.facebook.com/whitering999/
whitering.bandcamp.com/
( ;D --> It makes sense that upstart label Disaro calls Houston home; the city's humid weather and the syrup-sipping roots of the regional hip-hop scene perfectly suit the label's releases, which feature swampy atmospheres and slowed-down vocals run through varying levels of oppressive static. New York duo White Ring have that distinctive lean down pat, especially on "IxC999", scheduled for released on Disaro. A skeletal drum machine clatters with low-rider menace, while vocalist Kendra Malia alternately whispers and chant-sings about "ice in her hand" as walls of blown-out bass threaten to drown her out. At its core, "IxC999" is pretty fucking scary, from Malia's voice to the sound effects (creaking doors, gunshots) on down; by the time it dissolves into high-pitched staccato moans, you don't know whether to nod your head or hide under the covers.)

Sigur Rós

sigurros.bandcamp.com
www.facebook.com/sigurros
( ;D --> You can forgive Sigur Ro´s for being hazy on the details of the recording of their sixth album Valtari. It’s either the album they always wanted to make, or the album they almost didn’t make, depending on how you look at it. In 2011, the band started the painstaking forensic task of piecing together a cohesive and magical work from disparate constituent parts. If this sounds unromantic, the results are anything but. Something alchemical occurs when the four members of Sigur Ro´s are in the room together, and even if Valtari is more a “studio based” album than any of its predecessors (which usually start life as rehearsal room jams), the long hours of experimentation and unsentimental editing have yielded incredibly persuasive results.)

Gregor Tresher
www.gregor-tresher.de
( ;D --> In the field of electronic music, Gregor Tresher is by no means a debutant. For more than ten years the thirty-four-year old DJ and producer from Frankfurt gathered merits modernizing the algorithms of electronic music. It has been his “Still EP“ in 2004 that upgraded him into the Champions League of European Techno producers. After many highlight releases like “Neon“, “Full Range Madness“, “The Wombat“ or “The Now People“ on labels like Intacto, Cocoon, Great Stuff or Rebel One, it was his eagerly-awaited debut album “A Thousand Nights“ that defined the state of the art in electronic dancemusic 2008, with its titletrack beeing the year´s best selling Techno song on Beatport.)

( ;D --> Clock DVA are an industrial music, post-punk and EBM group from Sheffield, England. The group was formed in 1978 by Adolphus "Adi" Newton and Steven "Judd" Turner. Along with contemporaries Heaven 17, Clock DVA's name was inspired by the Russian-influenced Nadsat of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. Dva is the Russian word for "two". Vlimmer
www.facebook.com/VlimmerMusic/
( ;D --> Alexander Leonard Donat aka Vlimmer has something versatile. Every single EP appears to be a new experiment and exploration of atypical electro-pop fields. This work moves towards wave-pop fields, which are clearly inspired by the 80s. The songs have been built up with minimal-electronics, but I also noticed guitar playing that reinforces the link with new-wave and related genres. The work moves from dark- and dreamy passages towards elaborated electronic minimalism with German vocals on top. Darkgaze/Darkraut/Darkwave/Drone/Ambient.)

www.facebook.com/pg/Blackjack.Illuminist/about/
( ;D --> Brazilian graphic artist and composer Thiago C. Desant (based in Italy) released the new Swim album under his solo moniker Phantoms vs Fire via Hypersoma Records in January. The record swings between deep synths and palmy drums in a very wide and stargaze chill-out groove. The music is so intricate, offering 11 colorful instrumental tracks that match up to a glorious sonic canvas of high-quality musings, and high-quality sound. Rich and opulent, the record holds amazing moments and complicated arrangements that all fans of Philip Glass’ craft shall adore, while the other team–the fans of Mike Oldfield–will find the missing stone they are looking for in delicate and accurate aesthetics. For the rest of us who still insist on drowning in our chambers of amplified and overdriven sounds, the record is an oasis of perfectly balanced instrumentaton without any iteration on the narrative.)

( ;D --> Kode9 (born Steve Goodman in Glasgow, Scotland) is a London-based electronic music artist, DJ, and owner of the Hyperdub record label. An MC, The Spaceape, is a frequent collaborator. Initially inspired by what he calls the "hardcore continuum", he also draws on dub reggae, and was one of the founding members of the early dubstep scene (which he views as a continuation of developments originally stemming from UK Hardcore). He appeared on the Grime compilation on Rephlex, and released the full-length album Memories of the Future (featuring the Spaceape) on his own label Hyperdub. Kode9 has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Warwick and has published a book, Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear.)

The lines "We're not a couple of shadowboxers/Oh/Oh/Just two Anglo-Saxons" from the 2008 track Butterfingers and "We were just pretending to be Japanese" from Photocopier may be comments on the band name and how it is perceived.)
