Flavor of the Week #40

The Neon Judgement
www.facebook.com/TheNeonJudgeMent/
( ;D --> The Neon Judgment hail from the small town of Leuven near Brussels, Belgium and gave birth to the New Beat and EBM scenes worldwide with the release of their first two cassettes Suffering (1981) and TV Treated (1982). Always a consistent duo of Dirk Da Davo (synthesizers, vocals) and TB Frank (guitar, drum machine, vocals) The Neon Judgment worked in a parallel world alongside Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, and the Deutsche Neue Welle recording under the watchful eyes of Roland Beelen (Antler-Subway) & Ludo Camerberlin (A Blaze Colour). Davo Da Davo and TB Frank veered between minimalistic industrial drones and odd, new wave-ish synth pop and dance music, underlain by cold, mechanical rhythms. The band combinded brash and seedy lyrics, with raw synthesizer stabs and repetitive drum machine beats both aggressive and danceable.)

Captain Mustache

( ;D --> Captain Mustache is a French music producer and DJ from Paris. He's been working on his project for many years to propose an army of beats. As a true electronic music lover, he worked with some electro idols (Adamski, Chicks on Speed, The Advent, Paris The Black Fu, Keith Tucker, Play Paul...) to bring an extra vocal dimension to his music. Inspired by 80's pioneers, Detroit techno and electroclash freaks, we can define his sound as romantic & burlesque electro.)

( ;D --> Daphne Guinness had lived many lives before she turned to music: heiress, philanthropist, mother, muse. She modelled for such fashion greats as Karl Lagerfeld and Philip Treacy, produced and appeared in Oscar nominated art films, designed her own lines of jewelry, make-up and perfume, and enjoyed long creative associations with editor Isabella Blow, designer Alexander McQueen and photographers David LaChapelle and Nick Knight. But really, her greatest work of art has been herself. With her extraordinary two-tone beehive hairdo, vertiginous platform shoes, exotically layered costumes and phantasmagoric jewelry, Daphne Guinness became renowned as one of the most strikingly dressed women on the planet.)

But the album also reveals other genre explorations like on the track “E”, a pure club hit evoking 90’s trance with a cutting edge à la KÖLSH, the more breakbeat oriented cut “T” and its ORBITAL-like addictive vocal melodic lines, the dark techno pearl “S” and its lush rolling bass lines reinforcing its overall somber atmosphere or yet “G” and its rough and hammering techno body assault evoking GESAFFELSTEIN and other TERENCE FIXMER.)

( ;D --> Naeon Teardrops, a fresh electronica project from Norway. But here’s a twist: the talent behind this name is none other than the seasoned Norwegian techno artist, Per Martinsen, also known as Mental Overdrive. For those who’ve been around, Per Martinsen isn’t a new name. He’s been a force in the hardcore, rave, and techno scenes for over 30 years. Starting in 1990, he kicked off with powerful techno tracks on the Belgian label R&S. He’s also worked with labels like Smalltown Supersound, Ploink, and Virgin Records, to name a few. With Naeon Teardrops, Martinsen is diving into synthpop and darkwave sounds, giving them a modern twist. This new direction stems from his fictional autobiography, “Pyramids On The Moon”.)

Reinvention and rejuvenation born out of self- help, therapy and discovering your inner spirit through meditation, manifesting, reading and writing. ( ;D --> Autechre is an English electronic music group consisting of Rob Brown and Sean Booth, both natives of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Formed in 1987, the duo are one of the most prominent acts signed with Warp Records, a label known for its pioneering electronic music and through which all Autechre albums have been released. While most associated with IDM (intelligent dance music), Booth and Brown are ambivalent in relating their sound to established genres. Their music has exhibited a gradual shift in aesthetic throughout their career, from their earlier work with clear roots in techno, electro and hip hop to later albums that are often considered more experimental in nature, featuring complex patterns of rhythm and subdued melodies. Autechre have also recorded under various pseudonyms. One of the duo's earliest recordings was a 12" under the alias Lego Feet, released in 1991 on Skam Records. The majority of releases by the mysterious "umbrella project" Gescom, most of them on Skam, have been attributed to Booth and Brown, among other artists.)

By combining their knowledge of philosophy, science fiction, and mechanical engineering, at a time when electronic instrument companies were only just beginning to distribute their products to the masses, two prosumer audio technicians named Juan Atkins and Rik Davis were able to re-engineer Cybotron – a combination of the words “Cyborg” and “Cyclotron” (an atomic particle accelerator) – to be used as a home studio performance music that would change the course of independently produced and distributed electronic music.)
