Senior is furthermore an album about age, horses and being subdued – with devils breathing down your neck. Senior was written as a complete set of tracks, each designated to take a specific part in the bigger piece. Drawing inspiration from the likes of fellow innovators including Harry Partch, Sun Ra, and Captain Beefheart, the Residents channelled the breadth of American music into their idiosyncratic, satiric vision, their mercurial blend of electronics, distortion, avant-jazz, classical symphonies and gratingly nasal vocals reinterpreting everyone from John Philip Sousa to James Brown while simultaneously expanding the boundaries of theatrical performance and multimedia interaction.)

( ;D --> The Residents have been on quite a creative streak in the first decade of the new millennium, with a bunch of new albums, a pretty extensive reissue campaign, and retrospectives like the Kettles of Fish compilation. The "Ten Little Piggies" referred to are actually ten different projects that may or may not be completed and/or released (actually, as of the release date in late 2009, a couple of the projects have been released as downloads only and The Ughs! received a physical release as well). It's quite a mix. Several of these projects revisit earlier ones, like the Tweedles and Voice of Midnight instrumentals, which are interesting because those albums were originally so driven by narrative that the music was almost secondary. Apparently, they're also working on a Duck Stab Re-Imagined album, represented here by an almost drum'n'bass-style &"Semolina" and a surprisingly dark take on &"Laughing Song," reduced almost entirely to percussion. There are a couple of soundtrack projects (Strange Culture and Haeckel's Tale) and a couple extensions of the Bunny Boy saga: &"Arkansas" and a live album from the Bunny Boy tour. Perhaps the two best tracks come from the Talking Light project, described as "interpretive storytelling with an interactive electronic score"..."based on a mix of improvisation and scoring." They're both creepy and hilarious in that special Residents way. Will all these projects see the full light of day? Who knows. But Ten Little Piggies is further proof (if you needed any) that the Residents are certainly among the most restlessly creative and productive groups in the history of mankind.)

His father owned a large collection of usual and unusual instruments like the bagpipe, accordion, guitar, piano and harmonica's. Somehow this must have contained him with some musical interest. Michael Jackson also got airplay in his living room. But it was in a summer that his father who is also working as a forester was on a patrol in the eastern part of the island. He found a black colored tape who someone must have lost during a walk. When he took it home, he gave it to his son with the words “perhaps you could do something with it”. Not much later he bought his first taperecorder. The next thing he did was to put the tape in and take a listen. Soon there were all kinds of weird and freaky noises coming out. It attacked him. “What was this kind of sh*t?” he wondered. After that listen he did put it away in the closet - only for a very short while. He realised that this must have been the first serious house music he had been listening to. On the tape was Detroit orientated techno from producers like Orlando Voorn, Speedy J, Joey Beltram and Carl Craig who worked with the characteristic hardware equipment.)

Yet what distinguishes them from dozens of other Hackney hopefuls is the way they sound - a fresh, unclichéd resynthesis and reinvention of music that's both pleasingly familiar and thrillingly new, like World Music from the future. With largely acoustic resources - percussion, bass and wind instruments - they have conjured and refined a group signature that's immediately recognisable. Thanks to the use of the hang, a tuned percussion instrument bought on impulse at a music festival, they have a sound that is instantly attractive, yet uncompromisingly individual, and it's this, combined with the cheerful eloquence of their performances, that has brought Portico Quartet a long way in a short time.)

( ;D --> Multiverse Music have pulled together several of the best labels in dubstep and techno. The labels include Tectonic, Earwax, Caravan, Build and Kapsize, along with other currently dormant labels (Subtext, Vertical Sound etc) and between them they've helped define the sound of Bristol's bass music culture over the years. Multiverse Music have released a compilation to tie everything in together, it's called Dark Matter, which steers us from the early days of dubstep, with classics from Pinch, Skream and Loefah, to now, with the likes of Joker, 2562, Emptyset, Baobinga and even me (hello).)

Kuedo (Jamie Vex'd)
www.myspace.com/kuedo
( ;D --> Jamie Vex'd slips into his Kuedo moniker for a delightfully wonky mix of bass music.Even if you only have a passing interest in the more sub-heavy end of dance music, chances are you'll have heard of Vex'd. Jamie Teasdale and Roly Porter's fusion of dubstep with industrial and UK rave music on 2005's Degenerate album paved the way for countless international and festival appearances. Tiring of the hectic schedule and life in London, the pair decided to move from the city in early '07, with Roly heading west to Bristol and Jamie jetting to Berlin. Unfortunately, this meant that producing collaborative Vex'd material for their planned second album was a slow and difficult process, and they consequently decided to each focus on their own solo material. Jamie has been the more prolific of the two thus far, again aligning himself with Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu imprint for 12-inches both as Jamie Vex'd, and more recently under his new Kuedo moniker. The recent material has seen Teasdale move away from the dark and industrial dubstep sound of Vex'd, instead taking inspiration from the new wave of off-kilter beatsmiths that have emerged in the post-Dilla era.)

( ;D --> The duo Vex’d were among the first of the dubstep generation of producers to collect their work on a full album. Degenerate was assembled in 2005, around the time these childhood friends had moved to Bristol to soak up the birthplace of the electronics that had inspired them. Their work together has been sporadic since, but the spooks+jackhammers of tracks like “Crusher Dub” have resonated widely. Maybe even back to the source: Portishead’s “Machine Gun” gets its stun from the same mix of unnatural snares and lovely ambiance.)
