Flavor of the Week #51

Holyother
www.myspace.com/holyother
( ;D --> Taking the alien kinetics of UK garage, the euphoric highs of vocal house and the slow, sensuality of R&B, Holy Other has created a sound that’s as melancholy as it is beautiful, spectral and yet slightly at unease with itself. Playing the five songs that make up his debut EP ‘With U’ feels like a slow, solitary walk into the city night, lights flashing around you, muted when once they seemed to shine more brightly.)

( ;D --> Ottawa's Encephalon unite an accessible and club-friendly sound with the outrageously dynamic vocals of bandleader Matt Gifford. Elements of the classic Canadian electro-industrial sound are woven together with futurepop melodies in a way you've never quite heard before.)

Oval

( ;D --> Ever since his groundbreaking early album releases, Markus Popp aka “Oval” continues to be one of *the* prolific / influential forces in contemporary electronic music, a true visionary of digital audio. Popp’s now legendary early album releases sent shockwaves though the electronic music landscape and laid the foundations for an entire new class of digital sound & production aesthetics. With an undeniable instinct for the pleasantly irritating, the drastic and the dreamy, Popp pioneered “glitch” and “clicks & cuts” – and continues to inspire and provoke a new generation of musicians to this day. Oval's new music is functionally much closer to his older music than to anything else, if a bit more skeletal-- nicely harmonized blips and smears of abstracted noise (with some relationship to plucked-string timbres a lot of the time), rhythms that sometimes splatter freely and sometimes snap to a regular pulse. It's lovely, it's pleasantly unsettling, and there's a hell of a lot of it.)

( ;D --> Murcof is the performing and recording name of Mexican electronica artist Fernando Corona. Corona was born in 1970 in Tijuana, Mexico and raised in Ensenada. He was for a time a member of the Tijuana-based Nortec Collective of electronic musicians under the Terrestre project name. In 2000 he returned to Tijuana, but has since relocated to Barcelona, Spain.angre iluminada. Murcof's music is sparse, minimalist, electronica. Although founded on abstract, glitchy, sometimes complex electronic percussion, Corona's recordings are more melodic and traditionally structured than many contemporary electronic musicians. Many recordings feature orchestral strings sampled from recordings of works by modern composers such as Arvo Pärt.)
