Flavor of the Week #22

Francoise Dillinger + LLoyd Stellar
( ;D --> Detroit based electro and techno artist Francois Dillinger (Natural Sciences, Blind Allies, Dionysian Mysteries) collaborates with LDI Records owner Lloyd Stellar for the imprint's third vinyl release. Machine Men EP sees the pair working in a deep and contemplative sonic world, inspired by the potential future where the relationship between man and machine becomes blurred. The story of this EP takes place on a future earth, at a time where technological performance enhancing implants push identities of human and machine into a gray area which is no longer binary. On this earth, conservative groups oppose this development, stuck in the idea that machines are subordinate to humans. The EP explores this oppression of different ideas around identity, finding parallels with the same discourse and challenges that today we see in modern society and the fight against conservative, populist right wing politics to create an accepting and equal world. Specializing in moody, atmospheric electro, LDI Records (Lloyd's Dark Imperium) are an essential label to watch.) LDI Records.)

( ;D --> Lloyd Stellar is one of the alter ego’s of Dutch electronic musician Erik Griffioen. His electro sound is characterized by machine-like beats, melancholic pads, vocoder-driven vocals and futuristic themes that often deal with the apocalyptic consequences of man's greed, the relationship between humans and machines and wars on distant planets.)

Kangding Ray

( ;D --> Kangding Ray is David Letellier Born 1978 in France, lives and works in Berlin.Studied and graduated in architecture in Rennes and Berlin, works in different fields: music, architecture, performances, installations. Evolved as a guitarist and drummer in bands whose influences ranged from noise-rock, to jazz, before buying an akai sampler and moving on to electronic music. Kangding ray's music reflects his wide musical background, and a particular way of merging beats and textured soundscapes into slowly evolving compositions. KR combines machines with « real instruments » in a subtle and rythmic suite, integrating noises, walls of distortion, massive bass lines, voices and field recordings. The result is a blend of deep advanced grooves and dark atmospheres, that one could describe as « abstract bass music ».)

Lycia
https://www.facebook.com/LyciaBand/
( ;D --> There are many ways to describe darkwave band Lycia. Given the group’s quintessential gothic temperament, bleak, beautiful, esoteric, and ethereal?all ring true. Mentioned less often, however, is the band’s influence on a raft of acts that have quarried the dark veins of evocativeness that Lycia exposed. Label Handmade Birds recently released Lycia’s 1996 album, Cold, on LP for the first time, and with the band’s first full- length in? a decade, Quiet Moments, due for release in August, Cold‘s reappearance is a timely reminder of Lycia’s legacy in the sphere of bewitchingly mournful music. Lycia’s melding of dreamy synth and solemn rock has had a formative role to play in inspiring and nurturing artists who make brooding and shadowy rock and pop, and many contemporary noise, metal, and hauntological electronic outfits have also clearly drawn from Lycia’s darkly poetic oevure for inspiration. The band was originally founded as a solo project by guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist Mike Van Portfleet in 1988. However, it’s Lycia’s mid-‘90s work (with vocalist Tara Vanflower and multi-instrumentalist David Galas) that is most heralded for its blend of dark psychedelia, electronic soundscapes and spectral, plaintive vocals.)

( ;D --> Erot is Tore Kofod born in 1986 in Aalborg, Denmark. As a child he played recorder and drums, but stopped at the age of 9. In an early age he showed interest in electronic music: first it was Kraftwerk, and then later, he expanded to the sounds of Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and such. In the age of 10 he heard his first goa track, and was fascinated and thrilled with this type of music and the emotions he felt.)
