This album contains delicate tunes like 'Swastikas Commando', an orgy of sound with harsh distorted vocals. The second album 'Children of God" is a little more accessible, it even contains two dancefloor hits with the irrestible 'Last dream of Jesus' and 'Anatomy of a Murder'. Not that this is music for the light-hearted, the world of Haus Arafna is merciless, full of urban nightmares. It reminds of vague B-movies, through its strange samples, screams, sounds and graphics. The tracks on this, his debut release for Warp, are a touch more incisive, although in other respects it seems that little has changed for Patten in the past two years. The sound remains much the same—a pulverised form of electronica tempered with a subtle melodic glow—and passing comparisons can still be made to Actress’ heat-warped techno, or Flying Lotus at his most fervidly psychedelic.)

This might have to do with the fact that this kind of music is not aiming a busy dance floor, rising its hands and shouting out loud during the breaks.  Instead of that, it is made for the individual mind and therefore includes a less functional but pretty intellectual, mature and also very artistic moment. Seen in front of this background, the history of Koan gives some interesting hints about the astonishing musical quality of this Russian duo.)

While his career as a student would prove short-lived, he integrated into Provo and SLC’s underground music and art scene, left religion behind, and called his new band “Choir Boy”.)
