oOoOO
www.myspace.com/wkwkwkwkwkwkwkwk
( ;D --> While the earlier part of this new decade was full of hope, soundtracked by the dreamy, nostalgic feelgood vibes of Memory Tapes, Toro Y Moi and Washed Out; a darker mood has descended on the music scene now, courtesy of the gothic, woozy beats of Salem and the movement they’re calling “witch house” or “drag”. It would seem that with Eyjafjallajökull erupting, the oil slick and fears of “double-dip recession”, we don’t have much to be happy about after all. “Drag” took its name from the syrupy, chopped and screwed hip hop of Houston-based DJ screw – vocals are timestretched to infinity (once memorably described as the sound of “Nick Cave smoking midnight cigarettes in slow motion”) and spooky synths and samples drift in and out of the flickering spotlight creating a Lynchian sense of unease and disquiet. While Salem released their monolithic sounding debut album, “King Night” in the fall, there are a host of other disparate artists lurking in the shadows, putting their own unique slant on this exciting, haunting new noise. Many of the bands from Balam Acab, oOoOO and Creep feature on ice-cool new imprint, Tri Angle, founded by Robin Carolan of the influential freak-noise blog, 20 Jazz Funk Greats. On his eponymous EP, San Francisco-based producer, oOoOO (pronounced “Oh”) takes the distorted, ghostly bones of hip hop and infuses a new sensuality and pop sensibility, reflecting his love of the boundary-pushing end of Top 40 fodder from Nicki Minaj to the sparse robotic funk of Britney Spears’ “Blackout” album. Quite simply, it’s the sound of the apocalypse set to a disco beat.)

( ;D --> It makes sense that upstart label Disaro calls Houston home; the city's humid weather and the syrup-sipping roots of the regional hip-hop scene perfectly suit the label's releases, which feature swampy atmospheres and slowed-down vocals run through varying levels of oppressive static. New York duo White Ring have that distinctive lean down pat, especially on "IxC999", scheduled for release on Disaro in the next few months. A skeletal drum machine clatters with low-rider menace, while vocalist Kendra Malia alternately whispers and chant-sings about "ice in her hand" as walls of blown-out bass threaten to drown her out. At its core, "IxC999" is pretty fucking scary, from Malia's voice to the sound effects (creaking doors, gunshots) on down; by the time it dissolves into high-pitched staccato moans, you don't know whether to nod your head or hide under the covers.)

Maybe it's because they're American, but there's definitely an instinctive feel for R&B elegance and graceful suspension at play here, something alluded to by reams of UK producers, but rarely achieved with this kind of tingling sensibility. The standout track is easily 'No Think', a near side-long swinger built from ethereal, yearning vocals, viscous 2-step patterns and droning subbass looming from their densely lush atmospheres. Complementing the vibe, the enchanting 'Inside' closes the side with a shorter, beatless piece of electronic ambience worthy of Tim Hecker. Meanwhile on the A-side we're in thrall to the crisp drums, smudged chords and sun-heated strings of 'Fleur' and another surefire spine-tingler, 'Your Love'.)

Formed in 1987, the duo are one of the most prominent acts signed with Warp Records, a label known for its pioneering electronic music and through which all Autechre albums have been released. While most associated with IDM (intelligent dance music), Booth and Brown are ambivalent in relating their sound to established genres. Their music has exhibited a gradual shift in aesthetic throughout their career, from their earlier work with clear roots in techno, electro and hip hop to later albums that are often considered more experimental in nature, featuring complex patterns of rhythm and subdued melodies. Autechre have also recorded under various pseudonyms. One of the duo's earliest recordings was a 12" under the alias Lego Feet, released in 1991 on Skam Records. The majority of releases by the mysterious "umbrella project" Gescom, most of them on Skam, have been attributed to Booth and Brown, among other artists.)

Ecks was born to a Mexican mother and an American-Ethiopian father. He has been releasing music since the early 1990s among the San Diego Hip Hop scene, notably with the Masters of the Universe crew. Ecks gained notice from Warp Records in 2008 after an appearance on Californian musician Flying Lotus' album Los Angeles, where he sings on the track "Testament". His Warp debut album, A Sufi and a Killer was released on March 8, 2010. Ecks' voice was described by Pitchfork Media as "a scraggly, scary, smoked-out croak that creeps like the spiritual offspring of George Clinton and Leadbelly". He attributes his singing voice to his day job teaching yoga when he had to "to project from my stomach more".)

The London-based producer is a hot commodity in the d&b community after only a few releases, and his first release after signing an exclusive deal with Shogun Audio only serves to intensify his personal quirks. It's not hard to see why he's so in demand, as his productions are dynamic and resoundingly clear, every element individually tangible in a genre where the basslines and thrashing drums often compete for which can cause the most hearing damage.)

( ;D --> Autechre is an English electronic music group consisting of Rob Brown and Sean Booth, both natives of Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

( ;D --> Gonjasufi (born Sumach Ecks, aka Sumach Valentine, c.1978) is a rapper, singer, disc jockey and yoga teacher from San Diego, California and currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada.

( ;D --> The White Lies are a UK-based band from London. They originally formed as Fear of Flying but soon found new material they were developing no longer suited their old moniker. They are known for a sound that is both rich and dark, with Harry McVeigh's forceful voice taking center stage, adding weight and presence to the songs. Their lyrical content is suitably dark as well, with their song "Death" defining this position with the lyrics "I'll live on the right side, and sleep on the left. That's why everythings got to be love or death.")
