( ;D --> The clash of two greater artists is the clash of minimal synth and dark electro. This time, there is no room for an original track, but room for a remix. Two artists that have gained control, two artists that have some thing in common, and some things that are uncommon. As the lavishly created spasmic rhythms that follow a trail emblazoned by the most minimalistic of synth you’d ever lay your hands upon, but at the same time delivering the chaotic atmosphere of electro. Yes, electro was infused in the original version of “System Control“, but it’s even more infused with Ekman‘s style of electro, which has a muddy layer of atmospheric delight – to infect your senses with. There may be similarities between the two, but they’re in no way so similar that it wouldn’t make any difference if he (Ekman) lent a hand to the production. ( ;D --> Patten’s music doesn’t benefit from prolonged exposure. Certainly, condensed into 23 minutes on the Eolian Instate EP, the producer’s signature style is far more palatable. The tracks on this, his debut release for Warp, are a touch more incisive, although in other respects it seems that little has changed for Patten in the past two years. The sound remains much the same—a pulverised form of electronica tempered with a subtle melodic glow—and passing comparisons can still be made to Actress’ heat-warped techno, or Flying Lotus at his most fervidly psychedelic.)

( ;D --> Dopplereffekt‘s Heinrich Mueller has teamed up with singer/composer Victoria Lukas for a new collaborative audio-visual project, Zerkalo.
This week sees the release of two 12-inch EPs by Zerkalo, both on Clone Records‘ new sub-label Aqualong, dedicated to the legacy of Detroit electro myth-makers Drexciya (of which Mueller, real name Gerald Donald, was almost certainly an active member).
Mueller has never confirmed his role in Drexciya, and since 1995 has been primarily associated with his Dopplereffekt and Arpanet projects. Combining stone-cold Detroit electro/techno sounds and aesthetic preoccupations with, er, eugenics, totalianiarism and particle physics, Dopplereffekt’s wonderfully severe records are pretty much all classics; the Gesamtkunstwerk compilation, first released on International Deejay Gigolos in 1999 and later re-issued by Clone Classic Cuts, is the best introduction to their work. Currently a duo comprised of Mueller and Michaela To-Nhan Bertel, Dopplereffekt remain a shadowy entity but have recently broken cover to play a run of live shows (see picture above) and this month gave their first ever face-to-face interview in The Wire.)

While the musical style and the act's image changed radically during a non-release period from 1999 to 2003, two steady characteristics are the display of a thematic affiliation with science and the obvious use of pseudonyms and the hence rumoured but unconfirmed identities of the members.The main member during all periods has probably been producer/ artist Gerald Donald alias "Rudolf Klorzeiger". Donald is generally accepted to be also the author of the acts Heinrich Müller/ Der Zyklus, Japanese Telecom and Arpanet as well as one half of the band Drexciya (with James Stinson). During that period the sound of these two acts showed strong similarities, in their Detroit electro sound that took influences from industrial, new wave, electro-pop and others, reforming them in a style which is musically complex, often using jazzy modal sequences, and alongside other Detroit based acts on the labels Underground Resistance and direct beat they were highly influential in the 90s' revival of electro.)

( ;D --> Matthew Flanagan is an electro head's electro producer, the kind that releases on niche labels catered to people who like exactly that kind of music. Transmuter, the second EP on Rob Booth's fledgling Electronic Explorations label, is easily his most prominent record yet, and it's got a more accessible sound to go with the territory. "Delusional" is all about the bassline. It's a concrete base for the throbbing distorted percussion, and it's got one hell of a hook, too. There's an unusual amount of space in "Drippin," which is mainly to make way for a metalic chord progression. The track fuses techno aesthetics with Drexciya-style synth blasts. Groove is paramount on Transmuter, and the butt-wiggling style is a direct contrast to the more abrasive elements that make up these tracks. It's most apparent on "Skitzo," which smooths out a searing acid line with an easygoing house strut. The excellent EP is rounded off with a brief diversion into wispy ambience that shows off the other aspects of Flanagan's range.)

( ;D --> Matthew Flanagan is an electro head's electro producer, the kind that releases on niche labels catered to people who like exactly that kind of music. Transmuter, the second EP on Rob Booth's fledgling Electronic Explorations label, is easily his most prominent record yet, and it's got a more accessible sound to go with the territory. "Delusional" is all about the bassline. It's a concrete base for the throbbing distorted percussion, and it's got one hell of a hook, too. There's an unusual amount of space in "Drippin," which is mainly to make way for a metalic chord progression. The track fuses techno aesthetics with Drexciya-style synth blasts. Groove is paramount on Transmuter, and the butt-wiggling style is a direct contrast to the more abrasive elements that make up these tracks. It's most apparent on "Skitzo," which smooths out a searing acid line with an easygoing house strut. The excellent EP is rounded off with a brief diversion into wispy ambience that shows off the other aspects of Flanagan's range.)

Gin started to experiment in the early 80’s with tapeloops, drumboxes, mono synthesizers and effect driven vocals to create his own electronic music. In the early 90’s Gin graduated at the royal art academy in Antwerp and was student at the Royal conservatory of experimental electronic music. In 2008, Gin decided that it was time to wake up the sleeping beast Vomito Negro and released “Skull & Bones” and “The 2K10 Remakes”. In 2011 “Slave Nation” was released, this album is Gin’s answer to our vanishing freedom in the name of global security and the fake war on terror. In 2012 EK product released Gin Devo’s solo project “Surface”. Surface was recorded in 1988/89, several visual artist used Gin Devo’s electronic soundscapes in Antwerp’s abandoned icefactory, or in Antwerp’s never used metro network to support there works. In May 2012, EK product releases “Errata”. Errata is a rhythmic driven solo project written in 2011. Errata is roldschool, only hardware synthesizers, gate/step sequencers and vintage drum machines are used to compose and record the album. No software plug ins or VST’s are used to create this album.)

The Wire magazine named it their album of the year and it came fifth in the Mixmag 2006 Album of the Year list. On Friday, September 28th 2007, a new Burial album was announced, and Untrue was released 6 weeks later on November 5th. Although both albums have been met with much critical acclaim, Burial remained anonymous until August 2008, stating in a past interview that “only five people know I make tunes”. In February 2008, The Independent reported that Burial was an alumnus of south London’s Elliott School named William Bevan (another alumnus, Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, said in 2006 that Burial was in the year above him). The school’s alumni also include Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet, with whom Bevan has collaborated.)
